Every drain in your house clogs for its own reasons, and the fix that saves one can damage another. This guide covers the clogs we get called about most across Ventura County — dishwashers, kitchen sinks, showers, and yard drains — what you can safely do yourself, and the warning signs that a “clog” is actually a sewer line problem wearing a disguise.
How to Unclog a Dishwasher
A dishwasher that won’t drain is rarely broken — in our experience it’s almost always one of five things, and you can check the first four yourself:
- A clogged filter. Twist out the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub and rinse it. Months of food film here is the single most common cause.
- A kinked or clogged drain hose. The corrugated hose behind the machine flattens easily when the dishwasher gets pushed back in.
- The air gap or high loop. If the little chrome cylinder by your faucet spits water when the dishwasher runs, the hose between air gap and disposal is blocked — pop the cap and clear it.
- The garbage disposal knockout plug. If the dishwasher was installed with a new disposal and has never drained, the disposal’s knockout plug likely was never removed. This takes a hammer, a screwdriver, and two minutes.
- The line beyond the disposal. If the sink gurgles or backs up when the dishwasher drains, the blockage is in the kitchen drain line itself, not the machine — that’s a plumber’s snake job.
Kitchen Sinks: What Works and What Damages Pipes
The honest version of the “natural drain cleaning” advice: baking soda and vinegar make a satisfying fizz and will freshen a smelly drain, but they won’t move a real grease clog. What actually works, in order of escalation: a proper cup plunger, pulling and cleaning the P-trap under the sink (put a bucket underneath), and an enzyme-based cleaner used overnight for slow-but-flowing drains.
What we’d rather you skip: chemical drain openers. Caustic cleaners generate heat that softens PVC and eats at older metal pipe, they rarely clear a full blockage — and they turn the standing water in your sink into something our techs have to handle in gloves before they can even start work.
Showers and Tubs
Hair, soap scum, and hard-water scale — Ventura County’s mineral-heavy water makes the scale part worse than most places. A plastic barbed strip clears the stopper zone in seconds. If the tub still drains slowly with a clean stopper, the clog is deeper in the branch line, and repeated slow-downs across multiple fixtures point to the main line, not the tub.
Outdoor and Yard Drain Cleaning
Patio, area, and deck drains live a rough life: leaves, roof grit, and garden soil wash in every winter, and most yard drains run nearly flat, so debris settles and packs. If a storm drain backs up onto your patio, snaking punches a hole that lasts until the next rain — hydro jetting scours the full pipe diameter and is usually the only fix that holds through a wet season. It’s also the right treatment for pool-deck drains before winter.
When a Clog Is Really a Sewer Problem
One fixture backing up is a clog. These are something else:
- Two or more fixtures slow or backing up at once
- The toilet gurgles when the washing machine drains
- Sewage smell in the yard or from floor drains
- The same drain re-clogging every few months — classic tree-root behavior
That pattern means the main sewer line, and it deserves a camera inspection before anyone quotes you a fix. When to Call Us
