A rotten-egg smell (the odorant added to natural gas), hissing near a line or appliance, dead vegetation over a buried line, and an unexplained jump in your gas bill. Physical symptoms like headaches or dizziness indoors are a leave-now sign. Get out, then call SoCalGas and a licensed plumber.

Legally, gas piping requires a permit and inspection, and for good reason — an undersized or poorly sealed line risks leaks and carbon monoxide. This is licensed-plumber territory: we size the line to the appliance load, pressure-test it, and pull the permit so the work passes inspection.

In California, exterior residential gas lines are typically trenched at least 18 inches deep, with approved pipe and tracer wire — though your city's plumbing inspector has the final word, and requirements shift with pipe material and what the line crosses. It's one of the main reasons a yard gas run isn't a DIY job: when we run a new line to a BBQ, fire pit, or ADU, we pull the permit, trench and bed the line to code, and meet the inspector so the work is signed off and documented.

It depends on the run length, routing, and the appliance it feeds. You approve a flat, upfront quote for your exact installation — permit and pressure test included — before any work starts.

SoCalGas owns the lines up to your meter and will make a leak safe for free, but everything past the meter is yours — and the utility doesn't repair it. A licensed plumber locates the leak, repairs the line, and gets your service restored.

A red tag means the utility found a hazard and shut off gas to the line or appliance until it's repaired and verified. We fix the underlying problem, pressure-test the system, and coordinate the inspection so your service is restored properly.

Some Southern California cities require one when a home sells or is remodeled, and some insurers ask for one. Required or not, it's inexpensive protection — it automatically closes your gas line in a strong quake, preventing the fires that follow broken lines.
